In October 2024, “Josiah” (not his real name), a high school senior, was at imminent risk of expulsion—jeopardizing his ability to graduate. After receiving a final disciplinary warning and signing a behavioral contract, even one additional infraction could have resulted in removal from school. Past negative experiences in junior high had eroded his trust in authority figures, leaving him disengaged and resistant to support. School staff also expressed concerns about his peer associations and substance use, further increasing his risk.
Following a referral from the school’s student services department, Josiah was connected to YOS. Although initially reluctant, he began engaging in services after several weeks of outreach and rapport-building. By November 2024, Josiah committed to working with his YOS counselor to develop a personalized service plan focused on avoiding further disciplinary incidents, strengthening decision-making skills, and achieving graduation.
At the time, Josiah was living with his grandparents and had no contact with his parents, contributing to feelings of instability and isolation. Through consistent counseling and accountability, he successfully avoided any additional disciplinary referrals for six consecutive months—meeting the conditions required to remain in school. In May 2025, Josiah graduated from high school, becoming the first person in his family to do so.
During his final semester and throughout the summer, Josiah secured part-time employment, demonstrating increased responsibility and motivation. Although he turned 18 and was formally discharged from YOS services upon completing his treatment plan, his counselor continued to provide informal support, including assistance with college planning, connecting him with an academic advisor, and helping him prepare for employment opportunities.
Despite an unexpected family emergency that delayed his initial college plans, Josiah remained focused on his goals. He reported reduced substance use over the summer and later reconnected with his counselor to pursue enrollment in an automotive certification program. Today, Josiah is attending college and continues to build a path toward long-term stability and success.
Thinking about his experience, Josiah shared, “YOS has been a great resource and has helped me make better choices. I feel like they believed in me.” His journey underscores the power of persistence, trust, and targeted intervention in helping young people overcome barriers and achieve meaningful milestones.
