YOS believes that career exploration helps build stronger connections with youth and the community, and fosters a sense of purpose.
For several years, YOS has participated in the Chicago Youth Works summer employment program initiated by the City of Chicago. As a worksite, we directly hire youth to work at YOS. In addition, we provide computer labs for young people to complete their homework and apply for jobs. YOS helps youth prepare for a productive, meaningful adulthood by focusing on self-sufficiency through employment and occupational training. Since the program started, we have successfully employed hundreds of youths and guided them through managing their responsibilities.
The Youth Employment Program (YEP) is a comprehensive youth employment initiative that invests in the future of Illinois’ at-risk transition-age youth ages 16–24. The program recognizes that young people often face multiple barriers to employment, including physical, emotional, social, and mental health challenges. YEP addresses these needs while helping participants secure and maintain long-term career-focused employment, increasing their opportunities for success and self-sufficiency.
To support youth at different levels of employment readiness, and in partnership with the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, YOS operates within the established four program categories, which address varying employment needs and stages of workforce development. This flexible, multifaceted approach allows providers like YOS to design programs and services that best meet the unique needs of participating youth.
Creating a meaningful path forward for youth requires a holistic approach that recognizes the full scope of their realities and challenges. In addition to employment services, youth may need support addressing basic needs such as housing, healthcare, childcare, transportation, legal assistance, and community connection. All services are developmentally appropriate and tailored to each participant’s individual strengths, goals, and circumstances.

Expansion of Industry-Linked Career Development Opportunities
Expanded access to registered apprenticeships, non-registered apprenticeships, youth apprenticeships, and industry-recognized credentials that prepare youth for long-term career advancement and economic stability.
Short-Term Summer Employment
Work-based learning, career development experiences, and pre-apprenticeship programs are designed to introduce youth to the workforce and build foundational employment skills.
Targeted Long-Term Employment
Long-term employment and youth apprenticeship opportunities that provide sustained workforce engagement and skill development.
Career Development – Industry-Linked Long-Term Employment
Programs that connect youth to career pathways through registered and non-registered apprenticeships, as well as opportunities to earn recognized postsecondary credentials, industry-linked certifications, or licenses.
