Models for Change
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation launched its Models for Change initiative in four states, including Illinois. Youth Outreach Services, in collaboration with the Cook County Juvenile Court, has been awarded a grant to accelerate progress toward a more rational, fair, effective, and developmentally appropriate juvenile justice system that recognizes and meets the needs of involved youth with behavioral health concerns. Within the framework of the existing Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) in Cook County, Models for Change seeks to create successful and replicable models of juvenile justice system reform that: (1) assess the mental health needs of juvenile-justice involved youth, (2) provide timely and relevant treatment services in the least restrictive setting and (3) prevent the unnecessary detainment and involvement of youth with behavioral health needs in the juvenile justice system.
